Heather Hall’s Appointment Faces Strong Opposition from Activists

Heather Hall, a former Kansas City City Council member, has been appointed by Governor Mike Kehoe to the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners, a decision generating quite a bit of controversy. Activists and police accountability advocates are expressing their concerns about Hall’s past actions and her questionable objectivity when it comes to policing issues. Her appointment, serving as an acting member until confirmed by the Missouri Senate in 2025, is considered, by some, a blatant conflict of interest—especially as she is married to a former KCPD officer.

Local Activists Raise Alarm Over Hall’s Conflicts of Interest

Throughout her tenure on the City Council, from 2015 to 2023, Hall has been an outspoken opponent of local control over the police force, which irks many activists who argue that accountability is essential. In fact, her stance against reinstating local control and her push to eliminate the Kansas City residency requirement for officers have raised serious eyebrows. Lora McDonald, executive director of the Metro Organization for Racial and Economic Equality, didn’t pull punches, saying, “Hall is a conflict of interest and everyone knows it. Shame on Gov. Kehoe.” This sentiment reflects a palpable disdain towards Hall’s nomination.

Division Among Leaders Demonstrates Polarized Opinions

On the other hand, some officials have praised her selection. First District City Council member Nathan Willett touted Hall as a “common-sense leader” who demonstrates integrity, citing her volunteer work for homeless veterans and children with disabilities. Meanwhile, Sheryl Ferguson, an organizer with It’s Time 4 Justice, derisively called Hall the “Marjorie Taylor Greene locally,” drawing a parallel to the controversial Congresswoman known for her inflammatory remarks. Thus, very much like a political tug-of-war, Hall’s appointment has polarized voices on the ground, leaving many wondering where this debate will lead Kansas City.
